Greek Triemes
The Greek navy was mostly made up of triemes. They were small fast ships that were very easy to manuver. These ships were about 120 feet long powered by the ships rowers. There was a total of 203 men on this ship: 70 rowers, 25 saliors/officers, 14 spearmen and 4 archers.
Greek Naval Formations: hedgehog counter-formation, sailing line formation, periplous, diekplous
Naval Weapons
The sailors and ships of ancient Greece were armed with a ram, spears and bow and arrows. The ram was used to ram into enemy ships and puntcure their hull. On the ships there were 14 spearmen. They would be used to fight when ships pulled up next to each other. Finally there are 4 archers on these ships that would light the tips of their arrows on fire before firing the shot at the enemy boat. Setting the arrow on fire was a great way to spread damage on the ship.
