The roman cavalry's main sword was a long sword callers the spratha used to keep the enemy at bay while they slashed them to bits. The roman cavalry also carried a shield most commonly the wooden oval shield. The wooden oval shield was a oval shaped shaped piece of would covered in leather and had a black steel boss in the middle. The roman cavalry wore chain mail (rings of iron and bronze) that was partly covered in leather. The chain mail protected the Romans from light blows from the enemy but not much else. The cavalry's helmets were made of iron and bronze with extra strips of iron on top. The Romans also added mounted archers to there cavalry after they came in contact with the Parthian empire. The cavalries ranks were made up of solders from conquered lands.
